Recommendations for Adopting Virtualization

An article written for Sarbanes-Oxley Compliance Journal by David Lynch, VP of marketing for Embotics, offered thoughts on virtualization along with recommendations to optimize the technology. In the article he notes:

Virtualization started in most datacenters as a tactical effort; lead by IT, and focused on the ROI associated with server consolidation. But moving from tactical server consolidation to more production-oriented uses of virtualization, and increasing the percentage of your datacenter that is virtual, requires a more strategic view about the impact of this architecture on datacenter management and business controls.

The top recommendations centered on the need for control, including increasing visibility through monitoring and reporting, provisioning control, VM Identity management, mobility controls to enforce data separation and reclamation of end-of-life VMs. Lynch also advocates for automated processes, as he believes manual ones are inconsistent and time consuming, while automation increases control and reduces risk. He also cautions that some security infrastructures do not work well in virtualized environments. Read more here
