Real World Solutions from People in the Trenches Featuring Proofpoint, Inc. and the University of Alabama at Birmingham

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Information Technology manages more than 25,000 faculty, staff and student mailboxes. “As a leading research university and health care institution, UAB IT continuously focuses on enhancing our information security posture,” says Sheila Sanders, vice president for Information Technology at UAB. Sanders continues to say that the university’s previous open source anti-spam solution struggled to adequately meet the growing needs of the institution.

“After careful analysis and review of the anti-spam solutions on the market, we found that Proofpoint Inc. best met our requirements,” explains Sanders. “Deploying Proofpoint enabled us to dramatically reduce inbound email traffic. Simplifying our email architecture was an added benefit when we moved our anti-virus and anti-spam systems to the network border. The result was reduced malicious emails as well as significantly reducing storage and archiving requirements.”

UAB receives approximately one million incoming messages per day, of which 90 percent are spam. Since deployment of the appliance, UAB has noticed an extensive decline in both time and money spent on controlling spam. “Few products in our inventory have been able to deliver such instantaneous, noticeable and decisive results,” says Sanders.
