Combating Phishing and Fraud with DMARC
At the end of January, 15 leading technology ecommerce, and financial services companies jointly announced DMARC.org, a working group focusing on developing standards for reducing the threat of deceptive emails. The DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting & Conformance) specification standardizes how email receivers perform email authentication using well-known authentication (SPF and DKIM) and mass-scale, real-time sharing of global domain intelligence and policy enforcement.
Since the announcement, DMARC has garnered a lot of interest. For those curious about how to implement it for email security, an opportunity is still available in April to attend a training event. (The first event is being held tomorrow, Thursday March 29 in Washington DC. )
The Online Trust Alliance (OTA) is conducting an Email Authentication & DMARC Academy training session on Tuesday April 24, in San Francisco. The full-day intensive training session includes case studies, use cases and best practices for implementing, managing and optimizing email and domain authentication. Training will discuss technical details regarding SPF and DKIM deployment, including outbound and inbound authentication.
Now, in addition, the curriculum includes DMARC, which is already in production at Gmail and thousands of interactive marketers and brands worldwide. Trainers include Mike Hammer of American Greetings, Sam Masiello of Return Path, Tim Draegen of Agari and participation of Trent Adams of PayPal, who is also Chairman of the DMARC.org working group.
Following the training there will be an opportunity to offer input into the emerging DMARC spec. Those interested in learning more and/or registering can visit: https://otalliance.org/events/emailauth.html
