Should You Manage Social Media?

Our research shows that most email users don’t use social media for work or work-related purposes. That said, it’s absolutely critical that any organization manage its employees’ social media use in a couple of important ways:

  • First, archive content. Just like email and other electronic content must be archived for purposes of e-discovery, regulatory compliance, data mining and the like, social media content must also be archived.
  • Second, monitor content. Like any other communication medium, social media can be used to share company secrets, post inappropriate content and the like. If you want to see what kind of liability that social media represents, just do a search on Twitter for posts that discuss employees’ candid comments on their clients or their opinions of their manager.

In short, monitor and manage social media content like you do any other business record.
