Mark Wilcox of OctetString suggests that caching is evil for virtual directory and identity management applications. He’s right.

When synchronization creates too much overhead, or when metadirectories can’t provide data that is fresh enough, live access to accurate rather than outdated directory data can be provided with a virtual directory.

Wilcox’s short essay is a good one, and covers the major benefits of using virtual directories. It’s well worth a read for any system administrator wrestling with a decision about a purchase of directory technology.
