New and noteworthy for 10/27/08
The Root of All Email: J.D. Falk writes about the most recent updates to the IETF RFCs covering email in CircleID. Despite all the acronyms this is an important update as these two standards cover much of what we consider to be “email” in all of its forms. These new RFCs are RFC 5321 Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) and RFC 5322 Internet Message Format.
Peering Inside a Mobile Phone Network: TidBits has a very informative article on how the mobile phone network actually works that is well written and comprehensible. It’s worth a read if you are interested in learning more about how the mobile phone system works.
Digital Domain - Can’t Open Your E-Mailbox? Good Luck: The New York Times’ Randall Stross writes about the hazards of being dependent on the large, and typically free, email service providers. One of the major problems is that if something goes wrong and you become inadvertently locked out of your account, there may be limited recourse for interacting with customer service in a timely manner. This is certainly an argument for paying for service with telephone support if your email is critical to your business.
