The results are in from CNET’s Webware 100 contest to rank the top 100 Web 2.0 products and services. Webware’s editor Rafe Needleman posted analysis of the results. There were nearly half a million votes cast for the 250 finalists. The winners of were not ranked, however the top ten received 45 percent of the total votes. They are in alphabetical order:

• Bebo
• Firefox
• Gaia Online
• Gmail
• Google
• MySpace
• Stardoll
• Wikipedia
• WordPress
• YouTube

The ten categories in the contest:

• Browsing: Web browsers, extensions, widgets, and security
• Communications: e-mail, chat, VOIP
• Community: social networks, groups
• Data: search, storage, backup, sharing, and sync
• Entertainment: Games and contests
• Media: audio, video, photo
• Mobile: portable utilities and apps
• Productivity: apps, business tools, commerce
• Publishing: blogging, web content, design tools
• Reference: Mapping, reference works, and education

Web based polls are notoriously difficult to protect from fraud. It’s a shame that there was no substantial discussion of the vote taking methodology or any fraud protections employed. In any case, the list is interesting to peruse as a glimpse at what is currently popular.
