Ferris Research, a San Francisco-based research and consulting firm, recently released some new figures concerning the email archiving market in a new report, The Email Archiving Market, 2006-2010 (disclosure: Ferris Research is a client). The report notes:

  • The overall market for email archiving products and services in 2006 will total nearly $1 billion and consist of 30 million users. Revenue will increase by approximately 30 percent in the next five years.
  • Email archiving customers currently prefer software and appliances to services offered by hosted providers by a ratio of four to one.
  • Email security, and particularly enterprise content management (ECM), is encroaching on the email archiving market.
  • The report also finds that the worldwide market for archiving is driven by regulatory compliance, and today, that means the that the U.S. market is far and away the largest. It’s interesting to speculate on whether changes to the EU regulatory environment might change that; certainly, some of the data retention requirements being imposed on ISPs point to a sympathy there for logging network traffic.
