A little more than a month after Samsung pulled the plug on its Contact product, Scalix has released Scalix 10, which like Contact, is based on HP’s old OpenMail product.

Scalix’s product is essentially a backed alternative to Exchange combined with an AJAX/DHTML-based webmail client, Scalix Web Access. Under the covers, Scalix Web Access is code from OddPost used to power Yahoo!’s email service (Yahoo purchased OddPost last year for ~$30mm).

In addition, Scalix 10 supports shared calendaring between Outlook, Evolution and Scalix Web Access, as well as shared folders and contacts. The new version also allows administrators to manage users via the Microsoft Management Console, which is helpful for companies running Active Directory.

For companies left in the lurch by HP and Samsung, and for companies that want to run Outlook but not Exchange, Scalix is worth a close look.
