Portable Devices Get DLP Help

Mobile endpoint devices and connections are convenient and increase employee productivity, but these can also present new security risks to the enterprise because they often contain intellectual property or private customer information. Loss or theft of these endpoints can result in serious financial losses, legal ramifications, and sabotage brand image. To address these concerns, PGP Corporation this week announced PGP Endpoint.

The company says the product will enable IT Managers to centrally manage data loss prevention (DLP) with integrated data encryption and device policy enforcement for all removable storage devices (USB drives, CDs and DVDs) and mobile data connection technologies (e.g. Wi-Fi, FireWire, Bluetooth, etc.) to protect laptops, desktops, mobile devices and ports. "Until now, organizations have relied on end user education and compliance to corporate security policies to protect sensitive data," says Phil Dunkelberger, president and CEO of PGP Corporation. "PGP Endpoint provides built-in security that detects, authorizes and secures removable storage devices and media, as well as enforces a centrally defined device usage policy and stops data loss from network and peripheral connections."

According to PGP, PGP Endpoint also enables administrators to review device usage logs and establish policies to monitor the content of data transferred/exchanged to and from the device. Together PGP Whole Disk Encryption and PGP Endpoint provide enterprises with solutions to prevent data loss from laptops, desktops, removable storage, devices and ports. PGP Endpoint is now generally available with pricing that starts at $49 USD per seat.

"An antivirus product is useless if the user uninstalls it due to frustration with high system resource usage, slow boot times, endless popups and, worse, an inability to deal effectively with certain types of malware," says Eric Sites, CTO of Sunbelt Software. "VIPRE is designed to be a high-performance product, with broad-ranging detection and remediation of viruses, Trojans, worms, and spyware." The new technology was developed exclusively by Sunbelt, without building on older generation antivirus engines.

Real World Solutions from People in the Trenches featuring Titus Labs and The Australian Department of Defence

Titus Labs Inc., a provider of email and document classification software, announced Tuesday that the Australian Department of Defence has selected Titus Labs Message Classification (TMC), for 100,000 users, to force the classification of all emails in Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Web Access (OWA), and Windows Mobile.

According to Titus Labs, the Australian Department of Defence selected its software to protect sensitive government data contained in the millions of emails sent by Australian Defence. The solution adds value to the Microsoft infrastructure by forcing users to consistently classify all emails in compliance with the Australian Email Protective Marking Standard.

"Our Worldwide Public Sector customers now have the ability to force their personnel to classify messages and help protect data integrity," says Tim Bloechl, managing director, Worldwide Public Safety and National Security at Microsoft. "Titus Labs offers an outstanding secure messaging solution for data loss prevention."

Australian Defence is migrating from its in-house developed software to the Titus Labs, commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) solution.
