News from Lotusphere 2007

Last week nearly 7,000 attendees gathered in Orlando, Florida for Lotusphere 2007. The five-day conference included more than 250 breakout sessions, including hands-on labs and customer solutions panels; and a Business Partner Product Showcase with nearly 200 solutions built on IBM Lotus technologies. This year, organizers introduced a Lotusphere Complex in Second Life, marking the first time IBM has run a customer conference simultaneously in both the real and virtual worlds -- avatars could interact with Lotus experts, learn about software solutions, and experience Lotusphere from wherever they were.

As usual, lots of announcements were made. Too many to list and give justice to all. But here are a few highlights:

IBM

IBM announced that a new version of Lotus Sametime instant messaging and collaboration software -- which begins shipping in early second quarter 2007 --would include real-time point-to-point video for expanded communication capabilities. This release will also include integration with Microsoft Outlook and Office applications and support for Linux servers and Macintosh clients.

IBM also announced the planned availability of the IBM Lotus Notes and Lotus Domino 8 public beta starting this February. This is the final beta phase before the product's target ship date of mid-2007, concluding the most collaborative software review program in Lotus' history. Lotus Notes and Domino 8 expands the scope of the Lotus Notes work environment to include standards-based document editors, a Real Simple Syndication (RSS) editor and composite application support. Lotus Notes 8 customers can also easily link to other Lotus portfolio components such as social, collaborative content management, and unified communications software. The company says that significant email enhancements have been added to help increase productivity and avoid information overload. Features include "Recent Contacts" and "Message Recall." With Recent Contacts, users will get a one-click, dashboard view of recently sent emails and chats to quickly locate a key contact. The Message Recall feature will let users quickly recall an email message after it has been sent by mistake, saving a user from a potential conflict or miscommunication situation.

DYS Analytics, Inc. announced a new version of its enterprise instant messaging management software, Collaboration CONTROL!, with support for the newly shipped IBM Lotus Sametime Gateway for interoperability with AIM, GoogleTalk and Yahoo! metaLogic

Collecting, storing and analyzing email are all important parts of a discovery requests. Yet a discovery exercise can yield millions of matching email. This represents a real challenge. Fetch Pursuit 4.0 takes this challenge head-on, says metaLogic, through a highly scalable collection process, and by adding the ability to store discovery results in a relational database, effectively addressing storage capacity and analysis needs. The addition of SQL database support to Pursuit is significant, reports metaLogic, because using SQL as the collection database facilitates de-duplication (removal of duplicate email from search results) and simplifies analysis.

MartinScott Consulting, L.L.C.

MartinScott, an established provider of wireless email software for IBM Lotus Notes and Domino, announced Version 4.2 of its WirelessMail for IBM Lotus Domino software. WirelessMail 4.2 includes support for IBM Lotus Domino Web Access (iNotes). The company says it is the easiest, most flexible, and least expensive wireless email solution for Lotus Domino. WirelessMail runs on a IBM Lotus Domino mail server as a background agent in user mailboxes to auto-redirect copies of important emails via SMTP to any email addressable wireless device. Compatibility includes cell phones, pagers, BlackBerry handhelds, Palm devices, Windows Mobile devices, and other PDAs.

Avalon Business Systems

Avalon Business Systems, a developer of mail management utilities for use with IBM Lotus Notes and Domino, demonstrated its newest product, ReduceMail Pro Attach, an attachment management utility for Lotus Notes mail. The comprehensive attachment consolidation function offered by ReduceMail Pro Attach allows the Lotus Notes administrator to measure the volume of attachment duplication, which exists in the email enterprise. The Lotus Notes administrator can then consolidate a subset of those attachments based on size and duplication frequency. The end-user has full access to those attachments with a simple double-click on the respective emails. ReduceMail Pro Attach compliments ReduceMail Pro Archive, so that attachments can be consolidated while the remaining parts of the mail are archived.

Latest Cloudmark Release to Help ISPs

Last week Cloudmark announced its latest release of Cloudmark Authority to help ISPs further reduce spam, phishing, and viruses. Cloudmark Authority 2.0 introduces efficient rescanning capabilities that can continue to block messages up to the moment users open their inboxes. Cloudmark says this is the industry’s only end-to-end platform for messaging security that also adds enhanced message classification, zero hour anti-virus, and automated reporting to address the specific needs of different groups within Service Provider organizations.

As the sheer volume of abusive messages continues to rise, now exceeding 90 percent of 100 billion messages sent daily, minimizing email borne threats has become the single most important driver of subscriber satisfaction. Architected for service provider environments, the company believes Cloudmark Authority helps service providers maintain customer loyalty and create value-added services for enhanced competitive differentiation.
