November 20, 2006 FEATURE EDITORIALSecuring Outbound ThreatsA new report focused on messaging security trends in today's IT market conducted by the Aberdeen Group titled The 2006 Messaging Security Benchmark Report: Strategies for Securing Corporate Communications finds that while 80 percent of companies are aware of the threat of loss of confidential data by insiders, only 43 percent have implemented messaging security solutions that will stop the outbound threat. From a risk perspective, 91 percent of companies consider virus and malware to be a medium or high threat, and 86 percent consider spam to be a medium or high threat. Though 72 percent consider the external interception of confidential data to be a medium or high threat, only 25 percent have implemented messaging encryption solutions to mitigate the threat. "Email has proven to be the communication vehicle for over 80 percent of every organization's compliance, privacy and corporate governance violations and these violations are increasing every year," said Donald J. Massaro, CEO of Sendmail, the sponsor of the report. "Enterprises need to evaluate whether they have the adequate policy-driven security and messaging solutions in place to enforce compliance with corporate and regulatory requirements." Key findings in the report indicate that corporations can take several steps to review their messaging security plans and ensure their processes and technologies address traditional inbound threats and outbound data leak risks in an effort to protect against the transmission of sensitive data. The process of updating corporate security policies include:
"Messaging security solutions can have a beneficial impact on day-to-day operations while improving an organization's security posture," said Mounil Patel, research director for Aberdeen Group's Information Technology practice. "For those companies that have implemented clear security-related policies and practices and have an end-to-end solution for both outbound and inbound messages, the report found that 15 percent of respondents were able to reduce security staffing requirements, 15 percent reduced messaging operations staffing, and 12 percent reduced messaging services related capital requirements by implementing automated security solutions." In addition to outlining steps to implement best practices and policies, the report also identifies the top risks that are driving the adoption of secure end-to-end messaging solutions. While spam, viruses and malware continue to be the most important, the loss and leaking of confidential information is an increasing concern. Mobile Enterprise ContinuityEarlier this month Teneros announced the addition of peripheral application integration to its line of Application Continuity Appliances (ACAs) with the launch of the iSeries. The new iSeries appliances integrates with popular mobile and archiving applications that run in Microsoft Exchange environments, including Blackberry, Goodlink, Microsoft Mobile, KVS and Iron Mountain. The mobile and archiving integration is also available as an upgrade for existing Teneros customers. "If mobile email access goes down, it can bring the productivity of our mobile workers to a dead stop, so being able to provide continuous access is extremely important to us," said Willie Cumming, Director of IT for financial services firm, Strome Group. "The Teneros iSeries is exactly what we needed. It's affordable and easy to install, and because it integrates with our Blackberry server, if the Exchange server goes down, the Teneros appliance will prevent literally thousands of dollars in lost transactions per hour." The company says with its Plug-and-Go architecture, the appliance is up and running in approximately 15 minutes because it requires no intrusive software installations or configuration changes for the Exchange server or network infrastructure. "As more and more workers across all industries use their mobile devices to access email around the clock, the need for cost-effective email continuity solutions providing remote access 24x7 will continue to grow," said analyst David Ferris of Ferris Research. "By offering this capability in a simple appliance format, Teneros has a critical solution for the market." IN THE NEWSEnterprise IM Server Can Now Chat With Public IM SystemsJive Software is making enterprise instant messaging (IM) more open and user-friendly with a new version of its open source Wildfire server. The product now allows users to communicate with anyone employing public proprietary IM networks, including Yahoo, AIM, MSN and ICQ. Wildfire 3.1 features public gateway support to enable companies to broaden IM communications among their customers and partners, while still maintaining all the security, archiving, auditing and advanced management benefits inherent to an enterprise-class IM product. Wildfire 3.1 is an upgrade to Jive Software's Wildfire 3.0 open source enterprise IM server. The company says public gateways are easily incorporated into Wildfire 3.1 via an application plug-in, an administration benefit over most XMPP (Jabber) systems that require configuring each external component independently. Also, the plug-in model gives the gateways access to the server, which facilitates features like dynamic changes to users' rosters.
